Thinings in afforestations

Pine afforestations need to be thinned and pruned in order to obtain clear or at least good quality lumber. Thinning an afforestation means removing trees, so that the remaining ones get more nutrients and light, grow faster and healthier and are less prone to diseases such as Sirex noctilio. Pruning a tree involves removing the lower branches so as to get clear wood which has a 50 % higher value than the knotty wood. As a result, it gets easier to move through the afforestation and there is a reduction in the fire hazard.
